NC Bike Routes
Bike Route 1
Carolina Connection (US Bike Route 1)
W. of Laurinsburg -- 200 mi. in NC
Diagonal trip north across state, through Sandhills and
Piedmont Regions. Flat terrain at onset (route starts
at Rockdale Bridge Rd, W. of Laurinburg), but predominantly
hilly. Signed. Extension of East Coast Bicycles Trail,
designed to eventually run from Florida to Maine.
Bike Route 5
Cape Fear Run (NC Bike Route 5)
Apex -- 160 miles
Route runs north to south, roughly parallel to Cape Fear
River. Begins at Ten-Ten Rd. in Apex, ends at Southport.
Gently rolling hills leading to flat terrain towards
terminus. Signed route intersects with Carolina Connection,
Mountains-to-Sea and Ports of Call tours.
Bike Route 2
Mountains-to-sea (NC Bike Route 2)
Murphy -- 700 miles
Signed route begins on US 64 in Murphy, travels along lofty
peaks of Blue Ridge Mountains, drops 2000 feet to rolling
foothills of Piedmont. Passes through most of state's major
cities, onto Coastal Plain, finally to Manteco, Atlantic Ocean.
[It sort-of parallels 64, but meanders N & S almost
to the borders. The part near us comes from the west on
Kimesville/Old Greeensboro into Carrboro, circles CH to
the S on Mt Carmel Ch, crosses Jordan on Farrington, goes
E, hits Aviation Pkwy, around the airport and N Raleigh,
crossing Falls Lake and going N of Wake Forest. It then
heads back SE to Elm City (N of Wilson), and eventually
over to the coast.]
Bike Route 4
North Line Trace (NC Bike Route 4)
N of Piney Creek -- 400 miles
Signed route travels west-east across state, just south of
VA border. Access to six state parks and other recreation
areas. Route offers variety of terrain as it passes through
sparsely populates sections of NC.
Ocracoke Option
W of Wilson -- 175 miles
This route connects central NC with Outer Banks. Very flat
tour starts on Lamm Rd, W of Wilson, proceeds east with
little elevation change. Passes through farmlands and coastal
swamps areas. Several ferry rides necessary to complete trip
which ends at Cape Hatteras N.S.
Southern Highlands
BRP Milepost 412 -- 120 miles
This route start at Wagon Road Gap with steep plunge (2400 feet
in 15 miles) down Blue Ridge escarpment, and then continues into
Foothills region. Rest of trip characterized by intermittent
short, steep climbs. Ends at Lincolnton.
